Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Style

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in StyleFirst of all, just what is Cinco de Mayo? Many people assume incorrectly that it’s Mexican Independence Day, but that’s actually celebrated in September. Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. Mexico defaulted on debts due to poor financial circumstances across the country, so Napoleon III sent his troops to collect and take over. Things didn’t quite go as he expected, and this gave Mexico reason to celebrate.

Cinco de Mayo is not celebrated widely in Mexico like it is in the United States. In our country, we take it as an opportunity to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage, especially in areas with high Mexican-American populations. If you have a love for Mexican culture, we’ve got the tools you need to throw a celebration everyone will enjoy. Ready to plan that fiesta?

Plan and Pull off a Fiesta to Remember

A Cinco de Mayo Menu

Let’s start with the food, because, let’s be honest, we’re all about the food on Cinco de Mayo, right? How about setting up a taco bar and quesadilla station? For the taco bar, cook up your meat and seasoning and place it in a crock pot on the keep warm setting. Then set out bowls of shredded lettuce, tomatoes, salsa, onions, cheese, refried beans, queso and whatever else you like on your tacos. Grab hard and soft taco shells and have enough lettuce in case someone prefers a taco salad. And a side of Mexican rice is a crowd pleaser, too!

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in StyleFor the quesadillas, either cook to order or set out a preheated quesadilla maker. Great fillings include a variety of cheeses, chicken, grilled peppers and onions, and mushrooms. Cheese quesadillas are a crowd pleaser with kids. To go with your main dishes, set out bowls of chips and salsa, guacamole and queso dip.

And you can’t forget the drinks! Margaritas are the popular go-to adult beverages on this holiday. Buy a premade mix or mix up your own from scratch! But don’t forget the bottled water and sodas for those who might not have a good relationship with tequila.

Cinco de Mayo Decorations

Head over to any local party store, and we bet you’ll be met with an array of decorations for the perfect fiesta. If you can’t find Mexican-themed décor, print your own! From banners to signs and cactuses to sombreros, you can find things online to brighten your party. Grab colorful plates and napkins and a bright tablecloth. And don’t forget the margarita glasses!

Set up a couple of fun activity stations, like a photo booth with props like sombreros, cacti, mustaches and funny signs. Encourage friends to share their selfies. And in another corner hang a festive piñata filled with candy and trinkets for adults and kids. Be sure to play some upbeat mariachi music throughout the party for an authentic feel.
