Make Your Lawn and Garden Pop This Spring

Make Your Lawn and Garden Pop This SpringWe don’t know about you, but we are practically giddy at the onset of spring. We’ve certainly waited long enough and through more than our share of snow to get here! So, now that we can officially say that temperatures are warming up, it’s time to think about prepping your lawn and garden for spring! Here are our best tips to get your yard looking sharp.

Clean It Up

Get out those tools that are buried in the garage and put them to work! You’ll need to start by clearing out leaves, branches, sticks and other debris littering your yard and beds. Pull up dead plant material and weeds, and trim broken branches on trees and bushes. Be sure to give everywhere a good raking. Raking helps roughen the surface of the soil and loosens thatch in your turf.

Tackle the Prep Work

Once you’ve got a clean slate to work with, continue prepping your lawn and garden for planting and fertilizing. Turn the soil in beds, aerate the lawn, and add compost or manure to add nutrients before planting. Fertilize your lawn and apply weed treatments as needed. And don’t forget to grab the edger and leave those beds and walkways looking crisp and clean!

Make a Plan

It’s time to plan your planting! Pick the best spots for each plant based on lighting, soil drainage and proximity to other plants. Plan for color throughout spring and summer with plants that bloom at different times. Use a mixture of annuals and perennials, and don’t forget the mulch! If you have questions, the Prince William County Cooperative Extension is a great place to turn! Get answers, soil testing and more.

Maintain It

Once you’ve got everything looking great, you need a plan to keep it that way. Make weeding and deadheading regular tasks. Plan a second planting if you need to sneak in more annuals for color. Mow weekly, or as needed during hotter months, to a height of about 2.5 to 3.5 inches. Mowing high and often builds a tougher turf that’s less friendly to weeds. And make sure to put a watering schedule into your calendar for the summer.
